The Advanced Guide to Dressing For Your Body Type

If you search body types on google, there’s a chance you’ll find over twelve. I want to focus on the four most common body types and how to dress for each. The four most common body types are hourglass, apple, banana and pear.

Body Type Chart

Hourglass– The hips and bust are almost equal size with narrow waist.

If you have an hourglass shape you can pretty much wear it all.   Best clothes for an hourglass figure are A-Line and body hugging dresses they are the best way to show off your figure. Clothing that is cinched at the waist is perfect for the hourglass figure. You can also use a waist belt to accentuate your waist. You will want to stay away from pairing loose tops and bottoms together.

 

Pear– Your hips, butt and thighs are bigger than the upper half of your body.

The plus side to having a pear shaped figure is that you can create and illusion of an hourglass shape if styled correctly. Best clothes for Pear shaped bodies are wide-leg jeans, A-line dresses or skirts. Skinny jeans and loose tops create an hourglass illusion. You should wear crop tops, V or deep V will balance out your bottom half.

Avoid formfitting tops and loose bottoms.

 

Apple– Apple shaped women have a heavier upper body in comparison to their lower body.

Best clothes for Apple shaped bodies are clothes that show off your legs. You should wear printed dresses or patterned jackets to help shift the focus and wear flared or palazzo pants to create balance. More options for Apple body types are monochromatic and dark colors.

Avoid formfitting dresses and tops with skinny jeans.

 

Rectangle or Straight– Well balanced from shoulders to the hips. Similar to hourglass without the defined waistline.

Your legs and arms are assets. It’s best to accentuate your upper body with layered, sleeveless and strapless tops. Best clothes for rectangle or straight body types are blazers and long jackets.

 

Inverted Triangle– The most athletic looking body type. Shoulders are broader than hips.

With the inverted triangle body type your go to neckline are V-necklines as this will create an illusion of narrow shoulders. Best clothes for Inverted triangle body types are skinny jeans and pencil skirts.

Avoid layering tops this will add too much definition to your upper body.
